This year's ( 2006 ) Novice Horse
Championship was won by Verity Baker ( Pictured left ) , who clinched the title by
coming home a clear 5 seconds faster than her nearest rival Simon
Joel. Simon was 3rd in last years contest so will it be
3rd time lucky for him next year? The other places went ( in
order ) to Helen Kinsella , Heidi Elliott , Katie Frost and Emma
Lebutt .
A total of 26 combinations started the
competition with just 10 going through to the final jump off. The
course was set to ask questions of both the horse and the rider.
Related distances between some fences and a 'quirky' uphill oxer on an angle gave competitors and horses something to
think about , that's for sure!
Verity was riding her 14.3h gelding Laramie
(affectionately known as Larry). Her and Larry have been together
for 9 yrs. He was bought as a 3 year old at auction. Verity has been
riding since she was 6 and has been competing at Ashby and Orton RC
for a number of years.
Verity has just completed her degree course
at Leicester University and her win in this championship has been a
fitting end to the riding club season for her. We understand that
her sister had a riding accident earlier in the year and
Verity not only had to continue with her final year's studies in
business management , but also took responsibility for her sisters
horse.
Although being seen out at the occasional
hunt , her true passion is for show jumping. For her efforts Verity
picked up the Champions Sash , Trophy , Rosette and a nice
£100 winners cheque !
Well Done Verity and Larry
and well done to all the competitors who turned out and took part in
the six , strongly contested qualifying rounds over the past season.
We very much look forward to the start of the next one.
